Welcome to the new APL Zone blog! It's pretty barren right now, but I'm throwing caution to the wind and unveiling it anyway. I like to live on the edge like that.
So, quick rundown: this blog is where I'll update & remind you about things like: upcoming events, including programs, special events and projects, regularly scheduled stuff like the Roleplaying Club and Writers of the Oblong Table, and TAG meetings; new and upcoming YA book and movie releases; your book reviews;* and other things relevant to teens and APL. I'm also a news junkie, a weird facts junkie, a haiku junkie, a music junkie and a cat junkie, so expect some stuff along those lines, too--like, did you know that cats who listen to classical music are more likely to write haiku that follow the proper 5-7-5 format? Just kidding, I made that up.
I'll also be using this space to ask for your thoughts and advice on important stuff like: Can there really be too many YA dystopian trilogies published? Is it time for APL to stop having Harry Potter-themed events (in my opinion, no, no it's not). Do we want to hang this poster in the Zone or that poster in the Zone? What should I be for Halloween next October? Okay true, I'M working for YOU, but this is all a give-and-take, my friends, and I need ideas.
Speaking of ideas, I'll be picking your brains a lot over the next however long I'm here (i.e. FOREVER). I definitely have a lot of ideas for YA programming and the direction I see us heading in together (and I swear I mean that in the least creepy way possible), but to be honest, you're probably all a lot cooler than I am,** and I'd like to hear about what you're into and what you want to do and how we can make APL even cooler than it already is.
Some not cool things? Bullying and cyberbullying, drama of the stupid variety (there is some good drama--it's the kind that makes life more interesting without making anyone feel like garbage in the process), and events like what happened in Newton, Connecticut recently. Generally speaking, I like to mess around and make bad jokes and worse puns and not take things too seriously, but I don't make a habit of ignoring or belittling the bad stuff, whether it's happening in your life or somewhere in the world around us. Sometimes life warrants a blog post of the more serious variety. We can't prevent the bad stuff from happening, but we can at least create something meaningful from it.
Finally, I'd like to know more about YOU--your favorite stuff & what you do when you're just hanging out. What kinds of things you think are awesome; what you dislike. Whether or not you'd like to be a teen writer for this blog about stuff like school or video games or anime or whatever.
In the meantime, here's some stuff about me: I recently moved to Ames from central New Jersey, where I also worked in a library with teens. I like books. I bet you knew that, but here's the thing: I like them so much that I now have to wear the thickest pair of glasses you'll never see--and I say "never," because mine never leave my apartment; they're too nerdy, even for a nerd like me. (Plus, they're so thick that the weight of the lenses makes them fall off my face if I lean even just slightly forward.) I also like cardigans, probably because I'm a librarian, as well as parentheses and semicolons. I've been told that sometimes I have a "mean face," but that's actually just how I look when I'm thinking. I'm actually pretty nice, even (especially?) for someone from the Northeast, and I really love hearing from my teens, so stop by APL anytime to see me or hit me up via this blog or email or Facebook. Want to chat about books? Awesome. Want to chat about something else besides books? Equally awesome. I can't wait to get to know you all.***
*Also my book reviews, but hopefully mostly your book reviews. Hey, I write this blog! I can't do it all.
**When I say "probably," I actually mean "definitely." When I was a teenager, Jnco jeans and saying "dude" a lot were popular. Ever seen a pair of Jnco jeans? Yeah, not so cool.
***Did you seriously make it to the end of this atrociously, inordinately long post? Pat yourself on the back!
